COCOON THEATRE AND THE MILL ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN RED HOOK
“JOY OF LEARNING” MURAL RIBBON CUTTING
Erin Hayes, Mill Road Elementary School Principal and Andres San Millan, Cocoon Theatre Artist and Creative Director will officially present his mural “Joy of Learning”
to the general public and the Red Hook public school community on Friday, September 27 at 4:00 pm. at Mill Road Elementary School (K-2 Wing) at 9 Mill Road in Red Hook, NY.
A ‘ribbon cutting’ will take place, followed by brief talks from County Executive, Marcus J. Molinaro, Principal of Mill Road Elementary School, Erin Hayes, and
Superintendent of Red Hook Central School District, Paul Finch, as well as Marguerite San Millan, Cocoon Theatre President and the artist himself, Andres
San Millan. There will be an open discussion with the artist, as well as audience participation. Suitable for all ages. Free and open to the public.
Following the requests generated by students, faculty, staff and parents, Mr. San Millan was commissioned by Principal Erin Hayes and the B.L.T. Group to create this work
with funds contributed by the P.T.A. The aspects the school wanted to see in the mural located on the exterior entrance to the K-2 building ranged between diversity,
creativity, imagination, openness, and friendliness, to the unique identity of Red Hook, children’s joy of learning and the building blocks of primary education.
Principal Erin Hayes says, "In addition to the aesthetic effects, we worked on the curriculum connection of the mural to our classrooms. We have plans to use the mural –
in literacy: as a writer's workshop response, exploring descriptive attributes, creative storytelling, personal reflection, etc; in art class: looking at textures and mediums
to designs and shapes; in social studies: discussions tying in our community themes.”
The 15’ X 25’ mural, also accomplishes Mr. San Millan’s own artistic desire to revel in the world of the imagination behind the veneer film of reality. Mr. San Millan, Co-Founder
of Cocoon Theatre, has worked in numerous artistic ventures in the public school districts of Dutchess, Ulster and Columbia counties throughout the past 10 years, and was
recently widely publicized thanks to his sculpture “MAN” now at Taste Budd’s in Red Hook through December. His work in the public schools has included in-depth Portrait Residency
projects, Summer Bridge programs, and numerous dance, art & theater projects with students ages 7-18.

Hudson River artist, Andres San Millan, shares charcoal drawings on collaged paper and
gesso-ed masonite, as well as a painted driftwood sculpture, inspired by themes revolving around
Native Americans, driftwood itself, and the process of intuition.
"I explore inution as a creative door to the subconscious - a door with the potential to travel
through time (the past especially), with the aim of bringing back essential truths that the rush
of life wants to bury and forget. Come and discuss these issues with us." A. San Millan
